Northumbrian Water has revealed that a drain in Darlington became severely blocked after dozens of vapes were flushed down a toilet. A team of workers was dispatched to fix the blockage, where they discovered a staggering 57 vapes wedged inside a pipe, sparking concerns over the dangers of improper disposal.
We believes the incident may be linked to a growing trend among young people, who could be flushing vapes to hide them from their parents. The theory suggests that teenagers, in particular, may be reluctant to dispose of vapes in household bins for fear of being caught. Instead, they opt to flush them down the toilet, unaware of the significant damage this can cause to the sewage system.
Once the blockage was identified, the workers managed to safely remove the vapes and carried out a “routine cleanse” of the drain. Simon Cyhanko, the head of wastewater networks at Northumbrian Water, expressed concerns about the potential dangers posed by such items in the sewer system, particularly because vapes contain lithium batteries.

“As well as causing blockages, vapes are also possible explosive devices and have the potential to be dangerous,” Cyhanko warned. “Thankfully though, with the hard work of our teams, they were able to be removed quickly and safely without environmental impact.”
This incident is yet another example of the challenges water companies face when dealing with non-flushable items entering the sewer system. Northumbrian Water highlighted that one of the biggest causes of blockages continues to be wipes, which are commonly flushed instead of binned. Vapes, however, represent a newer and particularly concerning item, especially due to their composition, which includes plastic, metal, and potentially hazardous chemicals.
The water company is now working to “identify and educate those responsible” for this incident. Cyhanko added, “We often see things in the sewers that shouldn’t really be there, so we would like to remind customers that only paper, pee, and poo go down the loo.”
Improper disposal of items like vapes not only causes blockages but also has the potential to harm the environment and disrupt wastewater operations. This issue serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible waste disposal practices, especially as the use of vapes increases among younger age groups.
